One of the most common questions we're asked at Wheel Fusion is: how much does alloy wheel refurbishment cost? The honest answer is that it varies — but the factors that affect price are consistent and easy to understand.
What Affects Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Cost?
- Wheel size — larger wheels (19" and above) require more materials and time than standard sizes (16"–18")
- Level of damage — light surface scuffs are quicker to address than deep gouges, cracking, or widespread corrosion
- Finish type — standard paint refurbishment costs less than diamond cut or specialist powder coat
- Number of wheels — per-wheel costs may reduce slightly when refurbishing a full set of four
- Structural repairs needed — if the wheel also needs straightening or crack welding, this adds cost
Standard Paint Refurbishment
A standard alloy wheel refurbishment — stripping, filling, priming, painting in a single colour, and lacquering — is the most cost-effective refurbishment option. This covers the vast majority of refurbishment jobs and produces a factory-quality result.
Diamond Cut Refurbishment
Diamond cut refurbishment costs more than standard paint because the CNC machining process is time-intensive and requires specialist equipment. However, for wheels that originally had a diamond cut finish, it's the correct process — painting over a diamond cut wheel simply doesn't look right.
Powder Coat Refurbishment
Powder coating costs are comparable to high-quality paint jobs and offer superior durability. If you're changing wheel colour or want the most chip-resistant finish available, powder coat is worth the investment.
Is Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Worth It?
In most cases, yes. Refurbishment costs a fraction of wheel replacement, particularly for original manufacturer alloys which can be expensive to source. A well-executed refurbishment is also undetectable — the wheel will look factory-new.
There are cases where replacement is the better choice — if the wheel is severely structurally compromised, has been re-machined multiple times, or is a very cheap aftermarket alloy where refurbishment cost approaches replacement cost. We'll always give you an honest assessment.
